Early Treatment

Schedule Your Child’s Complimentary Appointment

At the office of Dr. Gordon Niles, we encourage parents to start orthodontic care early. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends children see an orthodontist by the time they turn 7. While this may seem like a young age to take your child to an orthodontist, an early evaluation with Dr. Niles can detect problems at the beginning stages so they can be corrected before they become more serious. Early treatment holds great advantages for your child’s future smiles by creating a healthy, comfortable bite while they are still growing.

Orthodontic Care for Children in Brighton

During your child's first visit with Dr. Niles, we will complete a thorough examination. We will look for problems that need to be addressed like crowding of the teeth, a 'gummy' smile or an open bite. If a problem or issue is found, your child may not need to be treated right away or may not need orthodontic treatment at all.

If Dr. Niles determines that orthodontic treatment will be the best solution, we will create a customized treatment plan designed just for your child.

Why It's Important to Start Early

When your child visits the orthodontist at the age of 7, the permanent teeth have not all erupted, which allows us to thoroughly evaluate the front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships and address any problems at an early stage. Correcting problems that are in the early stages of development will save time and give your child the best opportunity for having a straight, healthy and beautiful smile that will last a lifetime.

Common Issues

Because each child is unique, early orthodontic treatment can vary considerably between patients. These appliances can help to:

  • Provide more space for crowded, erupting teeth
  • Save space for teeth that have not yet come in
  • Create facial symmetry by manipulating jaw growth
  • Reduce or eliminate the need for extracting healthy teeth
  • Reduce the time spent wearing braces

Convenient Before and After School Appointments

If you would like to schedule your child's first orthodontic visit with Dr. Niles, please contact us today to schedule a complimentary consultation. Our office is located in Brighton, which allows us to see patients from Howell, Pinckney and our neighboring communities. We look forward to meeting you and your child and welcoming you to the Dr. Gordon Niles Orthodontics family!

Thumb Sucking - Dear Doctor Magazine

How Thumb Sucking Affects The Bite Thumb sucking can actually block the front teeth from erupting fully and can also push the teeth forward — sometimes more on the side where the thumb rested. When the pressure exerted by the thumb in the mouth is particularly strong and occurs over a long period of time, the forces can potentially influence growth of the jaws... Read Article
