Congratulations on your choice to begin your orthodontic journey, and getting braces from Dr. Gordon Niles Orthodontics. Dr. Niles and his staff have been providing adults, teens and children with the best orthodontic care in the Brighton and Howell areas since 1976. We want to ensure that your treatment is as efficient and effective as possible, so we have a couple of recommendations when it comes to eating with braces.
As a general rule of thumb, Dr. Niles asks patients to avoid eating hard foods, sticky foods and foods high in sugar. Hard foods can break or damage the wires and brackets, and sticky foods can get caught between the wires and brackets. By minimizing the amount of sugary foods you eat you can help avoid tooth decay and other related problems.
Avoid Sticky Foods Like:
- Gum (sugar-free or regular)
- Sugar Daddies
- Tootsie Rolls
Avoid Hard Foods Like:
- Hard taco shells
- French bread crust/rolls
- Corn on the cob
- Apples and carrots (unless cut into small pieces)
- Jolly Ranchers
- Pizza crust
- Uncooked carrots (unless cut)
Minimize Intake of Sugary Foods Like:
- Ice Cream
Drink Any ONE of the Below Beverages:
- Sweetened tea
- Drinks with sugar
By avoiding the foods above, you can avoid having to make emergency appointments at your Brighton orthodontist office to have your braces repaired or replaced. And by limiting how many sugary treats and beverages you consume, you’ll be helping to keep your teeth healthy so your time spent in braces won’t be prolonged due to having to undergo dental treatment.
