Damon Braces vs. Traditional Braces

Damon Braces vs. Traditional Braces
Posted on 04/23/2018

For a very long time, braces have been the treatment that orthodontists have relied on to create new smiles for their patients, since there wasn’t anything that was more effective and efficient at straightening teeth. However, as modern orthodontic technology continues to advance, braces didn’t just become better; new types of braces emerged that allowed orthodontists to cater to a wider variety of patient needs. Among these new types are Damon Braces, which are designed as an overall improvement to the traditional metal braces system, but do they actually accomplish that?

At Dr. Gordon Niles Orthodontics, we’ve been working the families of Brighton, MI since 1976 to create new, perfect smiles by using only the latest and greatest in orthodontic treatment methods and technology. Over that time, we’ve offered our patients both traditional metal braces and Damon Braces, and here we’ll be looking at what sets these two orthodontic solutions apart from one another, and if one is truly better.

What Are Damon Braces?

Damon Braces get their name from the doctor who invented them, Dr. Dwight Damon, who set out to create a better set of braces. At their core, Damon Braces still look and function like your traditional metal braces, utilizing brackets, wires, and targeted pressure to straighten teeth. Since they are so similar to traditional braces, Damon Braces are available to almost everyone who wants to get the perfect smile. However, Damon Braces do have some mechanical differences that change and improve the patient’s overall treatment experience.

How Are Damon Braces Different From Traditional Braces?

The main difference between Damon Braces and traditional braces lies in the brackets, which use a special self-ligating system to help the archwire move freely through the brackets. With traditional metal braces, the archwire is not free to move through the brackets, with the wire instead being directly attached to the bracket. When the wire is allowed to glide through the bracket with the Damon Braces system, patients require fewer adjustments and notice less friction and discomfort over the course of treatment.

Are Damon Braces Better Than Regular Braces?

While the self-ligating bracket and wire system with the Damon Braces is the main difference between the two types of orthodontic solution, the list of advantages that Damon Braces have over regular braces is a bit more extensive. The only downside to consider is that Damon Braces can be a bit higher in price, but that price comes with advantages like:

  • Shorter Treatment Time - the self-ligating brackets allow the teeth to move more efficiently into their new ideal positioning, sometimes shortening treatment time by four to six months in certain cases.
  • More Comfortable - With less friction created between the brackets and wires, patients feel less discomfort during treatment.
  • Shorter & Less Frequent Appointments - Since the Damon Braces need fewer adjustments, you’ll spend less time in Dr. Niles’ office for appointments throughout your treatment.
  • Available Clear Alternative - Damon Braces also offer clear, ceramic brackets that blend in with the natural color of your teeth for a more discreet look.
