Choosing an Orthodontist

How to Choose an Orthodontist
Posted on 01/18/2018

Many people know that when children turn 7, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) highly recommends visiting an orthodontist for the first time, to diagnose and evaluate any potential issues. Even if you’re an adult, finding the right orthodontist is extremely important as treatment can vastly improve both your oral and overall health.

At Dr. Gordon Niles Orthodontics, we want to ensure you make the correct decision regarding orthodontic treatment. Although we hope you choose us, below you’ll find guidelines to help guide you through this challenging process.

Create a List of Local Orthodontists

Typically, your family dentist will have a list of orthodontists they may recommend for you or your child’s care. While this is a great starting point, be sure to ask your family friends, colleagues or friends for recommendations. Some orthodontists may be better suited for certain situations, and varying levels of experience with certain forms of treatment. Everyone’s case is a bit different, so be sure to build a substantial list before schedule a bunch of appointments.

Do Your Research

Google is your best friend in the research phase! While you have some free time at home, go online and start searching for the names of the various orthodontists in your area. See if they have a website, and browse their various treatment options, technology, experience levels and more. Be sure to check out any online reviews they have, as nothing is more valuable than feedback from previous patients. Start with Google Reviews and Yelp, and identify what qualities you like about the orthodontist.

If you’re interested in finding a board-certified orthodontist, you can use this Board Certified Orthodontic Locator to verify whether or not the name of the practitioner is on there.

Schedule a Couple of Consultations

Most practices offer free consultations, where you can visit the office and be examined by the doctor free-of-charge. At your first visit, they’ll outline a treatment plan, methods of payment accepted, insurance information and plenty of other valuable information. Be sure to ask plenty of questions during this session, as finding the right fit for your treatment is one of the most important parts of the orthodontic journey.

When you leave the office, you’ll have a better understanding of how that orthodontist can provide you with the care you need.
