Common Questions About Invisalign

  • How long does Invisalign take?

Every patient is different, and orthodontic treatment time can vary greatly depending on the complexity of your case. Invisalign treatment usually takes 6 to 18 months for most patients, but that number could be longer or shorter depending on your specific orthodontic problem and how diligent you are in wearing the aligners.

  • How much do I need to wear the aligners?

You'll need to wear your aligners at least 20-22 hours per day for treatment to work correctly, and the more diligent you are in wearing them, the faster and more effective your treatment will be. Generally, you should only remove your aligners to eat, drink anything other than water, and maintain oral hygiene. That said, it's ok to take them out temporarily for the occasional photo, interview, or special occasion – just make sure you put them back in as soon as possible.

  • Do I have to avoid certain foods during Invisalign treatment?

Not at all! Because you remove the aligners to eat you can still enjoy all of your favorite foods during treatment. Just remember to thoroughly brush your teeth and brush and rinse your aligners before putting them back in, as any food particles or liquids caught under the aligners can cause tooth decay.

  • Will Invisalign give me a lisp or any other speech problems?

As with all orthodontic treatments, you'll go through a bit of an 'adjustment period' when you first begin treatment, and you may notice a minor effect on your speech during this period. However, this normally fades within a week or so, and with enough practice your speech will return to normal.

  • Can I chew gum with Invisalign?

Gum can damage the aligners, so you'll need to remove them if you need to chew gum.

  • Can I smoke with Invisalign?

Smoke can damage, stain, and warp aligners, so you'll need to remove your aligners if you have to smoke.

  • How do I clean Invisalign aligners?

Cleaning your aligners is easy: simply brush them gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a tiny amount of toothpaste, then rinse them off with lukewarm water. Avoid exposing your aligners to hot water, as this can warp them.

  • How frequently will I need to have check-up appointments during treatment?

At the beginning of your treatment, we'll need to see you for check-ups every 3 or 4 weeks to ensure treatment progresses smoothly. However, after that, you'll only need to come in once every 8 to 12 weeks, depending on your progress.

  • Will I need a retainer after Invisalign?

Yes, as with all orthodontic treatments, you'll need a retainer after you finish treatment. We'll provide more information and instructions for your retainer when we fiit you for it.
